Reel Serene – TechFest After-party

Glasgow’s leading venue SWG3, in collaboration with Skypark presents – REEL SERENE – featuring cutting edge animation by global giants AXIS STUDIOS with KIASMOS DJ SET BY JANUS RASMUSSEN and VANIVES on Friday 28th September 2018.

Skypark staff get an exclusive discount on tickets. Visit MySky for full details

Angela Higgins of Skypark, the curator of the event said: “‘REEL SERENE’ is our first international collaboration with neighbourhood venue SWG3. It blends the global animation talents of AXIS STUDIOS with Nordic KIASMOS DJ SET and Scottish duo VANIVES, to create a serene feast for all of the senses to enjoy. In future, we hope to encourage diverse collaborations with SWG3 that cut across the visual arts and music, and organically grow Reel Serene to an annual fixture.”

Sometimes, after a long exhausting day, you wish someone would bring you to bed, tucking you in, telling you a fantastic story? A tale, that is surprising and exciting, but is also warm and cosy, and embraces you like a soft and fluffy blanket?

That’s how a KIASMOS DJ set with JANUS RASMUSSEN works. It offers memories of wild and free minimal techno nights and 90s synthies, as well as childhood bonfires in the countryside. It carries light beats as well as unexpected compositions, organic structures and sound experiments, involving various instruments or event clicking fingers and mechanical clattering. It’s cosy but sexy, vibrant but soothing at the same time. And if you insist, it even bears the always compelling Scandinavian bonus – that (true) cliché of music that sounds just like one of those fairy tale countrysides and its lovely/nerdy/brilliant inhabitants.

KIASMOS is made up of Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer ÓLAFURARNALDS, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and JANUS RASMUSSEN from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavik, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen’s other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music. They eventually became best friends, often hanging out in their studio, exploring electronic sounds.

People were thrilled by their style, their live presence and the pleasure to watch them ‘at work’ in their own special way. In 2014, they managed to capture this experience on their debut album, Kiasmos’ (Erased Tapes Records). Besides performing as a duo, JANUS RASMUSSEN is also playing KIASMOS DJ Sets and is appearing at Glasgow’s SWG3 on 28th September 2018.

VANIVES are childhood friends, Roan Ballantine and Stuart Ramage that grew up in a picturesque, rural town in the South of Scotland. They first met as ten year olds lobbying to have a skate park built in Galloway.

The songs are written in a unique manner, by sampling family VHS tapes and building soundscapes and songs around the memories attached to those moments. The music is a cathartic nod to the past and a springboard to a bright future. Sonically they’ve managed to create a seamless analogue and digital blend, glued together with impassioned soaring vocals, routed in hip-hop influenced production. VANIVES’ debut single Positive is out now via Berlin label Vielen Dank Records.

AXIS STUDIOS is a multi-award winning animation and visual effects collective, comprising three artistically unique studios: Axis Animation, axisVFX and Flaunt. The studios work extensively across film, television, video games and themed entertainment, collaborating with the likes of the BBC, Channel 4, Netflix, Amazon Studios, Universal Studios, Sega, Blizzard Entertainment and Microsoft. Axis Studios is headquartered in Glasgow, with additional facilities in Bristol and London.

Across sci-fi, fantasy, horror and action they tell bold, cinematic stories for the biggest names whatever the medium, their content is striking and their characters indelible.
